In the spirit of vulnerability, I want to share my own experience with imposter syndrome, because I lived it for years.
💭 The moment of realisation, I found myself at my desk in mid-2022 trying to write a report for my executive team. My head was empty. One thought occurred to me. I can't do this forever.
📚The Clue was in my Bookcase I looked at my bookcase, four rows of books. 2 on tech. The others? Leadership, culture, faith and self-help. The two unread tech books confirmed what I had long denied: I was not in love with technology, I was in love with people.
⚠️ The weight of impostor syndrome. This explain my awkwardness of the praise for leadership, the sting of technical feedback. I knew in the secret places of my heart I was not who they thought I was. So I did too much. I worked harder, I stayed longer, I avoided exposure
🚫 Avoiding my biggest fear, social gatherings were my worst nightmare. I felt like a fraud, in the midst of IT experts. I’ve spent my career carefully navigating my way through life, but as technology has evolved so has my imposter syndrome.
😞 The effect on my entire life The mismatch had implications beyond my career:
❌Relationships – I wasn’t being true to who I was.
❌Health- I was stressed out and tired.
❌ Spirituality – I felt disconnected from my purpose.
🔎 The Answer Was Always There. My bookcase told me what I must do. I didn’t need to double down on tech – I needed to pivot. Once I bought into this the doors opened up. I earned new certifications, entered new spaces and stepped into a career aligned with my true purpose.
✨ What I Learned Letting Go, I don’t have the material ‘trophies’ of success but I do now have:
✔️ Relationships – More genuine and deeper connections.
✔️ Health - more balance and less stress.
✔️ Spirituality – Greater sense of purpose and faith.
In retrospect, the most difficult part was not the transition itself, but admitting that I needed to change.
🚀 A note to you If you find yourself feeling a subtle sense of being out of place in any of this, you are not alone. It takes courage to step into purpose, but on the other side is the life you’re supposed to live.
📩 Let's talk. The next step starts with a conversation.
